Frequently Asked Questions

What makes BeamIt unique?

BeamIt allows sending up to 20 GB of files for free with true end-to-end encryption. We don't artibtrarily limit the size of files you can send, so you can send one large file or many small ones.

Do I need to create an account?

To send files, yes (email OTP). To receive, no. Requiring a sender account stops abuse and keeps BeamIt free.

Is my data really private?

Yes. Files are encrypted in your browser with AES-256-GCM and we never see your key or contents. We keep minimal transfer metadata (size, count, timestamps). We store no filenames, filetypes or metadata beyond that. Encrypted files are also deleted after 72 hours.

Why does BeamIt exist?

I had to move a 17 GB file for work and every “free” site capped out at a few GB. I was already building an E2EE project using AWS Enclaves and wanted to try TanStack Start, so I built BeamIt as mostly a portfolio project.

Does BeamIt work in all browsers?

BeamIt works best in Chromium-based browsers (Chrome, Edge, Brave) because they expose the File System Access API that streams large downloads straight to disk with minimal memory usage. Firefox can usually handle transfers up to about 5-10 GB via StreamSaver before the browser runs out of memory. Safari still lacks a streaming download API, so downloads fall back to in-memory blobs and we suggest keeping beams under roughly 3-5 GB there. On iOS or other mobile browsers, expect a ~400 MB ceiling regardless of engine.

How is BeamIt free?

Sender accounts and 72-hour expiry keep storage low. If usage grows I’ll add a small donate button. If people want more bandwidth or longer retention, I will consider a paid tier.
